Virginia Repertory Theatre contracted Commonwealth Architects to design the rehabilitation of the façades of its locations in the historic Empire Theatre and the adjacent Little Theatre in downtown Richmond. The rehabilitation of the façade included adding elements such as marquees, signage, displays and lighting.
Necessary structural upgrades for rehabilitation were reflected in Commonwealth Architects’ recommendations. In addition, assistance was provided to create the proper legal entity to syndicate historic investment tax credits.
Virginia Repertory Theatre is a nonprofit, professional theatre for young audiences since 1975. Its home since 1977, the historic Empire Theatre opened on Christmas Night 1911 and is Virginia’s oldest extant theatre. Designed at the turn of the century, the Empire was hailed as one of the most beautiful theaters in America.
