Virginia Military Institute contracted Commonwealth Architects to perform a survey which examined thirteen historic structures on or adjacent to VMI property. The purpose of the survey was to research, document and assess these historic resources and to make recommendations as to their consideration in VMI’s future master planning and development. The historic structures ranged in date from the 1850s to 1949, and each building required archival photographic documentation, historical research, physical architectural examination, site planning consideration, and a Virginia Department of Historic Resources intensive level survey.
As a result of these surveys, recommendations for the thirteen properties ranged from retaining certain structures in place for rehabilitation to finding other structures appropriate for replacement with new construction. The Commonwealth Architects team authored a report detailing all findings of the survey, with specific recommendations for each property along with photographic and researched material.
