Virginia Military Institute | Crozet Monument Plaza

Lexington, VA
Services: Planning

Seeking to enhance the appearance of a portion of the Post between Crozet Hall and Scott Shipp Hall, the Virginia Military Institute commissioned Commonwealth Architects to provide planning and landscape architectural services for the Crozet Monument Plaza. The plaza design pays homage to Claudius Crozet, one of the great civil engineers of Virginia, whose remains are buried at the site.

The design mimics Crozet’s Arch, which allowed for the expansion of the Virginia Central railroad through the Blue Ridge Mountains at Afton Mountain. Surveyed and designed by Crozet, the 4,273-foot tunnel was opened in 1856 and at the time was the longest tunnel in the United States.
