Commonwealth Architects, along with Ballinger, Inc., was contracted to design the new Molecular Medicine Research Building at Virginia Commonwealth University.
This project inserts a 125,000 gross square foot, highly technical biomedical research facility into the dense, urban fabric of downtown Richmond, Virginia. The building was conceived to reinforce the lower scale streetscape of the surrounding historic structures, including the adjacent Monumental Church, while also creating a transition to the larger scale structures of the hospital complex.
βOn this prominent and historic hillside, the designers were hardly obsequious but delivered a sensitive and intelligent solution that gets better upon close examination.β β Edwin Slipek, Jr., Style Weekly
