Commonwealth Architects provided architectural and interior design services to Gumenick Properties for Penstock Quarter, in Libbie Mill – Midtown. As part of the master plan Commonwealth designed for the development, Penstock Quarter is a mixed-use, four story over podium structure combining retail, parking and residential. An expansive, elevated, central courtyard sits above the ground level parking and retail and is enclosed by 325 apartments on double loaded corridors from the second to fifth floors.
Drawing inspiration from the architecture and pedestrian scale of Richmond’s historic Shockoe Slip, brick facades accented by cornices crowning the parapet and breaking the vertical plane at the podium face the surrounding streets, seamlessly integrate into the established architectural fabric of Libbie Mill. To add variety and modernity, fiber cement panels are introduced into the facades overlooking the courtyard.
