After standing vacant for 26 years, Commonwealth Architects successfully transformed the former Maury School in downtown Fredericksburg into a residential use as well as space for the Central Rappahannock Heritage Center. The building, originally a public school facility for the City of Fredericksburg, received state historic rehabilitation tax credits from the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. In order to meet DHR requirements, part of the school’s auditorium remained intact and was converted into a unit that still featured the stage and 100 of the more than 700 seats that were once filled by students.
