Architectural Designer – Richmond, VA
Commonwealth Architects is looking for a highly motivated and creative individual as an Architectural Designer in our headquarters office located in the historic Shockoe Slip area of Richmond, Virginia.
As a firm, we specialize in contextual design by creating customized solutions to fit a specific environment. Our practice is constantly growing and includes corporate, governmental, multi-family, hospitality, and higher education projects as well as rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of existing buildings throughout Virginia and the mid-Atlantic region.
OPPORTUNITY
This opportunity is ideal for graduates of an accredited architectural program with 2-5 years of experience in the architecture field, with experience working on a variety of project types. We are seeking an individual with design skills and a desire to learn the technical aspects of the profession working on a variety of project types. This is an opportunity to work, learn, and grow as part of our team.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Professional degree in Architecture with 2-5 years of experience
- Strong communications skills; spoken, written, and graphic
- Ability to both conceptualize a building’s design and to develop construction documents for implementation
- Demonstrate proficiency with the use of AutoCAD, Sketch-up and Revit
- Strong design skills
- Experience in the selection of building materials and systems, and detailing systems
- Successful team-oriented and collaborative attitude
- Diligence in seeking solutions to complex problems
- Efficiency in responding to the team’s needs
- Effective time management with multiple deadlines
- Maintains a positive, professional attitude
- Be accountable and comfortable rolling up their sleeves.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work in all phases of the project from concept through construction
- Proficient in developing creative architectural solutions that meet the firm’s standard of design and client expectations.
- Make sound decisions on the methods of approach and development of project(s).
- Ability to independently evaluate, select and apply standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to each assignment
- Communicate with both internal and external team members including; managers, senior staff, team leaders, consultants, and clients
- Coordinate the project’s design intent with technical requirements

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
As part of our team you will:
- Project Leadership: Lead and oversee projects from conception to completion. Provide strategic direction, ensuring projects align with client goals and design standards. Develop creative architectural solutions that not only meet but exceed our firm’s design standards and client expectations.
- Client Interaction: Establish and maintain strong client relationships. Act as the main point of contact for clients, addressing their needs and managing expectations.
- Team Management & Collaboration: Manage a team of architects and designers collaborating effectively with other professionals involved in the design process. Thrive in a team-oriented environment, where your hard work, collaboration, and positive attitude are valued assets. Foster seamless communication with internal and external stakeholders, including managers, senior staff, consultants, and clients, to ensure alignment and progress.
- Time Management: Effectively manage multiple deadlines with finesse, ensuring projects progress smoothly and efficiently.
- Technical Proficiency: Excel in verbal, written, and graphic communication. Demonstrate proficiency in design software such as: Revit, AutoCAD, Sketchup, and Bluebeam, Adobe Creative Cloud and MS Office. Stay updated on emerging technologies and design tools relevant to the industry.
- Quality Control: Demonstrate advanced proficiency and knowledge of building materials and detailing systems, coupled with a deep understanding of building codes. Ensure that design solutions meet high-quality technical documentation. Exhibit diligence in tackling complex challenges, utilizing your ingenuity to seek innovative solutions.
- Mentorship & Training: As part of the Commonwealth team everyone is expected to provide shared knowledge, guidance, and foster a positive learning environment. We embrace peer mentoring and mentoring junior staff.
- Networking & Business Development: Cultivate and maintain relationships with clients and contribute to business development efforts, including participating in client presentations, proposal writing and community engagement.
- Strategic Planning: Contribute to the strategic planning of the firm. Provide insights and recommendations for firm growth, improvement, and efficiency.
EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
- 10+ years of experience
- Licensed Architect
- LEED accreditation, CSI a plus.
- Strong proficiency in design software Software: Revit, AutoCAD, Enscape, and Bluebeam, Adobe Creative Cloud and MS Office.
- Exceptional creativity, technical knowledge, and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Leadership experience, including managing and mentoring design teams.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
