FEATURED: Two Historic Jackson Ward Projects
Commonwealth Architects is excited and fortunate to be included in the transformation of the historic Jackson Ward neighborhood with both the St. Luke Building and the adaptive reuse of the former Baker School.
River City Ventures recently wrapped up a $4 million conversion of the St. Luke Building at 900 St. James St. into 14 one- and two-bedroom apartments. The century-old building, which housed the bank and other businesses of pioneering entrepreneur and activist Maggie Walker, includes a ground-floor commercial space that has been leased. The two-year-long project included historically sensitive design and is pursuing historic rehab tax credits. Commonwealth Architects provided architectural, interior design, and historic consulting services for the St. Luke Building and the two adjacent row houses.
The former Baker School property, a block west of the iconic St. Luke Building, is where a $16 million project is underway and scheduled for completion in mid-2021. The project by Enterprise Community Development (formerly Community Preservation and Development Corporation), in partnership with Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority, will consist of the full rehabilitation of the existing 65,000 square foot building into 50 affordable, senior, independent living units. The project is receiving Low- Income Housing Tax Credits as well as Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credits. Commonwealth Architects is providing architectural and interior design services.
