The Blue Ridge Community College Veterinary Technology program has been in operation since 1972. Fully accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association, the program has seen significant growth in recent years. To meet the needs of the expanding program, and to offer the most efficient and effective teaching environment to the students, Blue Ridge Community College contracted Commonwealth Architects to design a new large animal holding facility to allow the existing facility to be reused as a small animal holding space.
The new one-story building stands at approximately 3,000 square feet and is designed as an agricultural-style barn. Half of the structure will be used as classroom and demonstration space, with the other half designed with six stalls to accommodate large animals during inclement weather. The structure utilizes a wood-frame skeleton covered with aluminum siding.
