The VDOT Bracey Safety Rest and State Welcome Center Complex is located on I-85 Northbound at Virginia’s Mile Marker 1. The purpose of this project was to provide the design and construction of a new Safety Rest Area and State Welcome Center, replacing an existing outdated facility. This project was VDOT’s first design-build project to be initiated and was funded through the FHWA (Special Experimental Project 14).
The new building is approximately 17,000 square feet in size with a Williamsburg style architectural design. The building houses both VDOT and the Virginia Department of Tourism, with a separate office for the Virginia State Police and site maintenance staff.
The total facility includes a lengthened highway ingress ramp, variable message sign and expanded parking lots (cars and trucks) that meet the 2020 travel demand for I-85. The site also includes pedestrian walkways, child’s outdoor play area, three pet rest areas, over a dozen picnic shelters, two outdoor courtyards, two telephone kiosks and landscaping amenities that pass a CPTED review (crime prevention through environmental design).
