Commonwealth Architects provided architectural services for the design of the new 4,000 square-foot trail center at First Landing State Park for the Department of Conservation and Recreation. The new trail center features approximately 1,050 square feet of meeting space for up to 150 people and approximately 1,000 square feet of exhibit space, along with space for office, gift shop, storage, restrooms and a warming kitchen for catered events. The rear of the building also features a large viewing deck.
In addition, the building is LEED Silver certified. Beside concepts included using the water from the roof to irrigate plantings, sustainable naturalized landscaping, and utilizing fiber optics for interior illumination. The project also seeks to educate the public on the sustainable elements utilized on the project.
